Simple SEO Guide for Beginners

Keyword / Topic Research:

We will first generate a list of seed keywords and then use these seed keywords along with the user’s search intent to come up with topics for our blog.

Seed Keywords:

  1. Customer research.
  2. Competitor Targets.
  3. Social media observation and brainstorming.

Brainstorm seed keywords to target from your own landing page (Customer Research) + Competitor Pages & Blogs (competitor analysis). (use Google Ads’ Keyword planning tool or SemRush Keyword magic tool for this).

You can filter the keywords using Google Ads’ Keyword planning tool or SemRush Keyword magic tool to optimise for keyword difficulty (how difficult it is to rank based on DR, backlinks, etc) and average monthly searches.

User’s Search Intent:

Information kw (Customer is searching for How to/Guide) – Example: how to setup analytics? What is web analytics?

Navigational kw (Customer is searching for a particular product / page) – Example:  mixpanel, Amplitude analytics.

Commercial kw (Customer is doing commercial enquiry / looking to buy) – Example: mixpanel pricing, mixpanel review.

Transactional kw (Customer is looking to do some transaction / use tool) – Example: tool insurance calculator, Resize image, mixpanel login.

Topic for the content:

Use Seed keywords and Search Intent by Keyword Modifiers to come up with topic ideas.

Content research and creation:

Example for the topic: “Top 10 apps to quit smoking in 2024?”

Research:

Analyse top 10 ranking content and make better content from that.

  • Ask perplexity to use top 10 ranking pages for a topic and use that to create an outline
  • Improve the outline if you have something to add to.

Create Content:

  • Use perplexity to enhance/ elaborate the outline.
  • Use prompts like ‘Do not use jargon words’ to humanize the output.
  • Review the output for accuracy and edit the output as per need.

OnPage SEO:

Off Page SEO

PageRank is an Algorithm that judges the “value of a page” by looking at the quantity and quality of other pages that link to it.

Organic Traffic ~ Number of backlinks from unique domains.

Link building is the process of building relationships with other relevant site owners who want and will link to your content because it enhances theirs.

How to get backlinks?

  1. Create them (Low effort, low impact):
    1. Directories
    2. Blog comments
    3. Social media profiles.
  2. Buy them (against google’s webmaster rules and can result in a penalty or your site getting banned from google index. Also this is not cheap.)
    1. Slack and Discord communities exist where you can buy and sell backlinks.
  3. Earn them
    1. Emailing other site owners to link to you.
    2. Other Topics

What is a good backlink?

  1. Relevance: You should get backlink from sites in your niche.
  2. Authoritativeness: Basically you should get links from high domain authority/rating pages.

Key attributes of a linkable content:

  1. Non commercial content with high utility.
  2. Is highly useful and factual.
  3. Data studies and case studies attract links (does not even need to be your own data).

Link Building Strategies:

1. Guest Blogging (Guest Posting at Scale: Get Tons of High Quality Backlinks)
Guest blogging is when you create content for another website. The reason this strategy works is because there’s a clear value exchange. They get high-quality content for free, and in return, you usually get a link back to your site, either within the content or in the author bio.

Here’s how guest blogging works:

  • Find blogs in your industry.
  • Pitch a relevant topic and agree on it with the site owner.
  • Write the post for them.

How to find blogs for guest posting:

  • Use Ahrefs’ Content Explorer to search for a topic related to your niche.
  • Set the “One page per domain” filter to avoid pitching the same site multiple times.
  • Set the Domain Rating filter to around 40-60 to find websites with decent authority.
  • Export the results and start pitching.

2. Resource Page Link Building (How to Build Unique Backlinks With Resource Page Link Building)
This tactic involves getting backlinks from web pages that curate and link out to useful industry resources. It works because the sole purpose of these pages is to link to valuable resources. If your content is great and you bring it to their attention, you’re helping them fulfill their purpose.

Steps to follow:

  1. Find industry resource pages.
  2. Reach out to them and suggest your resource for inclusion.

How to find resource pages:

  • Search in Google using queries like:
    intitle:resources inurl:resources.html [your topic]
  • Check if these pages link out to external resources.
  • Reach out to the relevant ones.

You can also use Ahrefs’ SEO toolbar to check important SEO metrics like Domain Rating, URL Rating, and traffic estimations directly in the search results.

3. Broken Link Building (Broken Link Building in Action (Strategies, Outreach Emails and Stats Revealed))
This strategy involves finding dead links on a page, creating a similar resource on your own site, and then asking websites that link to the dead resource to link to your page instead. It works because webmasters don’t want to lead visitors to broken pages, so they’ll often replace dead links with a functional one.

How to do it:

  • Search for a topic in Ahrefs’ Content Explorer, then filter for broken pages.
  • Set a referring domains filter with a minimum of 10, to find pages with backlinks from at least 10 unique websites.
  • Use archive.org to see what content was originally on the dead page, helping you create similar content.
  • Check the Backlinks report in Ahrefs to find all the linking pages you can reach out to.

4. HARO (Help A Reporter Out) https://ahrefs.com/blog/haro-link-building
HARO connects journalists with sources. You’ll receive emails from journalists who are requesting information on specific topics. If you can add value to their request, respond with your expert opinion. If the journalist uses you as a source, they’ll usually link back to your site.

Why it works:
You’re exchanging your knowledge for a mention and usually a backlink from an authoritative site. There’s no shortage of requests from major publications like The Huffington Post, Forbes, Inc., Entrepreneur, and more.
